"Birth Control" for Pest Control

There are now four different contraceptive products registered by EPA for pest or wildlife control,

1. OvoControl (nicarbazin) for pigeons,

2. Zona-Stat (porcine zona pellucida or PZP), immunocontraceptives for horses (and many other large, wild animals including elephants, elk, and bison),

3. Gona-Con (gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)) by USDA Wildlife Services for white-tailed deer, and,

4. ContraPest (4-Vinylcyclohexene diepoxide and Triptolide) by Senestech for rats.

Each of the contraceptives builds on unique technological platforms with a similar biological outcome - interference with the reproductive system to slow or stop population growth.

HSUS Critical of Bird Poisoning at George Bush Airport

Wayne Pacelle’s letter to the editor describing the recent bird poisoning at the George Bush airport was published by the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday.  Pacelle is President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the world’s largest animal welfare organization.  Note the recommendation for OvoControl.

While OvoControl enjoys the benefits of HSUS support, we know enough about this market to unequivocally state that facility managers and engineers do not use OvoControl only because it is humane – they use it because the contraceptive program is highly effective in abating pigeons at impacted sites. 

OvoControl P Now LEED Certified

Based on US Green Building Council and San Francisco Department of the Environment guidelines, OvoControl P was recently classified as a "Tier 3" pesticide product.  This represents the "least-hazard" class and does not require notification of building residents prior to use.  OvoControl continues to collect certifications, endorsements and other accreditations as property and facility managers adopt the bird-friendly product for larger scale pigeon control.

RANCHO SANTA FE - Innolytics, a privately held San Diego company, announced Monday that the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a patent for their contraceptive technology. The new patent was granted to Dr. Alexander MacDonald, founder of Pharma Science, Inc. and co-founder of Innolytics, LLC. The company stated that the patent effectively provides broad exclusivity for the OvoControl® brand of products. When fed to targeted birds, OvoControl (nicarbazin) prevents fertilization of the eggs.  Earlier last year, Innolytics announced a contraceptive development program in mammals, financed in part through a Gates Foundation grant.   "This patent is a milestone achievement and represents the progress we have made in the field of wildlife contraception," said MacDonald.  "There is a demand for safe and effective contraception of wildlife by communities and businesses.  We are developing new products to meet this requirement". Established in 2003, Innolytics, LLC is a privately held company that focuses on developing humane population management technology for wildlife.  For further information, see the company website at ovocontrol.com.
