Canada Should Employ ‘Pigeon Birth Control,’ Says Expert

The best way to manage pigeon problems in Canada is to put the birds on “pigeon birth control,” says the director of an Alberta wildlife centre.

Carol Kelly, the executive director of Medicine River Wildlife Centre in Red Deer, says OvoControl, a new form of pigeon feed that controls reproduction in pigeons, is both more humane and more effective than current forms of pest control.

“OvoControl is proactive in that it reduces the number of pigeons,” she says. “The pigeons eat it, they eat it for a certain period of time and it makes their eggs not viable. There’s no hormones involved.”

Pigeons are known to breed rapidly-usually six times a year, at two eggs per clutch. Since OvoControl interferes with egg hatchability, it stops new birds from hatching and the population naturally declines.

Field studies of the contraceptive have shown a reduction in pigeon populations of approximately 50 percent annually and up to 88 percent over 28 months. Once the pigeons are taken off the feed, normal reproductive cycles return after a few months.

Currently, pigeon problems in Canada are largely handled by pest-control companies, which frequently use poisons, sticky glue, steel barbs, nets, and other repellants that can solve the problem in the short term.

OvoControl at a College Campus

The recent case study about OvoControl performance at Pima College in Tucson is now available in pdf format.

With the support of Arizona Pest Control in Tucson, Pima College was able to resolve their chronic pigeon infestation.  Based on OvoControl and augmented by quarterly live trapping, Arizona Pest Control was able to overcome the rapid breeding characteristics of pigeons and the tendancy to simply “harvest” birds.  Click on the link for a full copy of the report.

In terms of pigeon control, a college campus is not a great deal different than many other pigeon impacted sites — manufacturing plants, power utilities, hotels, food processing or healthcare facilities — complex installations with multiple structures, expansive areas with available food, water and quality nesting areas.

Pigeons reside in territorial flocks, a social unit, and pairs mate for life.  That is one of the many reasons why a contraceptive program in this species is so effective.  OvoControl prevents reproduction and the population of pigeons gradually and predictably declines.  Large sites including dense urban areas and large industrial facilities are ideal to take advantage of the new technology.

OvoControl Now Registered in Israel

Innolytics recently announced the registration of OvoControl P in Israel.

Dr. Alexander MacDonald, Innolytics’ CSO remarked, “Like so many urban areas, Israel is also plagued by too many pigeons. Many different communities and businesses are increasingly willing to the take the steps necessary to control the populations. As a contraceptive, OvoControl acts to limit reproduction and represents one of the most effective bird control techniques on the market today”.

“Israel is very sensitive to environmental and wildlife issues,” added Moshe Ben-Simon, Senior VP and Head of Life Science Division at Eldan, the OvoControl distributor in Israel. “There are just two ways to manage a population – either increase mortality or reduce reproduction,” added Ben-Simon. “Most conventional techniques focus on the former – the OvoControl technology on the latter strategy.”

Eldan, a part of the Neopharm group, a privately held company from Israel, is a leader in the marketing and sales of equipment, instrumentation and consumables in the areas of healthcare and life science. For detials see www.eldan.biz.

HSUS Registers ZonaStat-H for Wild Horses

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently announced the EPA registration of the first contraceptive vaccine for wild horses.

In addition to OvoControl® for birds from Innolytics and Gonacon for white-tail deer from USDA/APHIS, ZonaStat-H from HSUS represents yet another new contraceptive technology, this time for the safe and effective management of wild horses and burros.

Developed in collaboration with Dr. Jay F. Kirkpatrick, Director of the Science and Conservation Center in Billings, MT, ZonaStat is based on PZP, a protein which when injected, produces antigens that bind the sperm receptor sites and render the animal infertile.

The National Park Service started using PZP to manage the wild pony population at Assateague Island in 1994.  Since then, the product has been used successfully in a wide range of large mammals.

For more details see the HSUS press release describing the development and registration of ZonaStat-H.

OvoControl at Pima College

Given the number of structures and wide open spaces, OvoControl is an excellent choice to control pigeons at a college campus.

Pima College is a community college located in downtown Tucson, AZ. With nearly 10,000 students, the main campus has a challenging mix of open areas and structures.

In 2010, Arizona Pest Control (www.azpest.com) deployed an OvoControl population management program on the campus.  The OvoControl program was augmented by quarterly trapping.

Over a period of 24 months, OvoControl reduced the population from 200 pigeons to just 5 birds.  The campus remains effectively pigeon free.

“Hi Innolytics, I just wanted to let you know that my pigeon population at my home on Oahu has been reduced to 2 dozen from at least 80 birds last March…. while using ovocontrol since then…..at times I would have a flock of 200 on my roof, but no more! your product has made a huge difference in our lives.   The birds that live here now are healthy and no longer a nuisance for me. thank you, Gloria”

Las Vegas Parks

Makayla Zurn with ABC Channel 13 KTNV Action News reports on a pigeon feeding ordinance as well as the use of OvoControl by the Las Vegas Parks Department.  See the video at http://www.ktnv.com/news/local/136589518.html.  Just last month, Kevin Parker with Las Vegas Parks & Recreation was quoted by the Las Vegas Sun, expressing the Department’s satisfaction with the performance of OvoControl P at park facilities.   While reducing food resources is vital to any pigeon control program, most sites require additional control measures.  That said, anti-feeding ordinances are virtually impossible to enforce.  In this case, however, it would provide the local authorities with some leverage to encourage well meaning “feeders” to discontinue their practices.
